April Afternoon

The spots of April blaze
against Earth’s cracking.
Tulips lit like matches
held to cardstock clouds.

Pigeons hover in droves,
creating a crown in the air.
Their wings become eyes
that blink at me.

Windows line up in a row
as if emerging from the mason’s
careful brickwork.
Once I held something worth holding.

  1. “Tulips lit like matches held to cardstock clouds” floored me. I like how this also would’ve worked well for a previous prompt, the one about making observations about something and then using a surprising, seemingly unrelated, abstract line at the end. This was wonderful and impactful.

How long have you been doing NaPoWriMo by the way?

    1. I think the reason it feels similar to the last prompt is because James Wright’s poem in that prompt is part of the deep image movement, and Transtromer, the poet I was imitating in this poem, is also a deep imagist. It’s a really common move. Yesterday I imitated Robert Bly. Both of these imitations were actually homework assignments lol. It’s funny how the prompts sometimes work for the poems I’ve already written that day (this has happened multiple times haha)!
I’ve been doing a version of NaPo for about 10 years (since I was 16!), but I’ve only been following the prompts/posting to this site for three.

      1. I was just wondering because I know I recognize you from previous years doing NaPoWriMo, you’re one of the writers whose work I’m most excited to see. In my head I was feeling like I’d been seeing you around on NaPoWriMo.net for much longer but then again, the last few years time has felt different so maybe that’s why.

I love that the prompts keep just happening to work with other stuff you need to write. I look forward to seeing more!
